How does Zyrtec work?

Allergy - is a manifestation of hypersensitivity of immune system to an allergen (antigen) with repeated contact with him, which is clinically characterized by damage first of all of those tissues of the body on which influence the allergen: mucous membrane of the bronchi, alimentary canal, nasal cavity, skin, conjunctiva.

The action of Zyrtec does no depend on the functional state of several organs, especially of liver, thus providing the efficacy and safety of its use.

The medicine is indicated for all allergic disease:

  • Seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, accompanied by rhinorrhea, itching, sneezing, allergic conjunctivitis;
  • Medicine, proceeding from the itching and rashes;
  • Urticaria, including chronic idiopathic;
  • Angioneurotic edema.

Zyrtec does not interact with other drugs such as erythromycin, ketoconazole, cimetidine, and diazepam.

Taking Zyrtec and side effects

For children 1-2 years the usual dose of Zyrtec is 2,5 mg (5 drops) twice a day.

For children 2-6 years the usual dose of Zyrtec is 2,5 mg (5 drops) twice a day or 5 mg (10 drops) once a day.

For adults and children older than 6 years the usual dose of Zyrtec is 10 mg (1 pill or 20 drops) once a day.

For patients with moderate or severe renal insufficiency is appointed the half of recommended dose.

Do not take more than 50 mg of the medicine. It increases the risk of diarrhea, confusion, dizziness, fatigue, headache, malaise, mydriasis, pruritus, fatigue, sedation, drowsiness, stupor, tachycardia, tremor, urinary retention.

After ingestion of the large dose you immediately should care about gastric lavage or artificially induce vomiting. It is recommended to take a dose of activated carbon and also holding and symptomatic therapy.

Do not take Zyrtec while being pregnant or if you are going to be. Also do not take it during the period of lactation.

Sometimes you can feel such side effects as fatigue, asthea, malaise, and edema. During taking the medicine it is a risk of increasing in body, also itching, rash, urticaria, hypersensitivity, until the development of anaphylactic shock, rhinitis, pharyngitis, accommodation disturbances, blurred vision, nystagmus, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, aggression, agitation, confusion, depression, hallucinations, insomnia, tic, seizures, dyskinesia, dystonia, paresthesia, syncope, and tremor. These side effects are rather serious and occur quite rare.
